Best Dressed at the BAFTAs

UAwards season rolls on and it's the turn of we Brits to roll out our, exceptionally cold, red carpet at the BAFTAs.

Last year's BAFTAs fashion parade was so awesome - Angelina in that suit! Lupita in that green! - that this year's was always going to feel a bit of a let down. There were still some great looks though and the overall aesthetic is very much my scene - clean lines, minimal styling, proper grown up glamour.

Here's my top five...

Lea Seydoux in Prada

Remember when Michelle Williams wore that yellow dress, red lipstick combo to the Oscars and everything was suddenly right with the world? Lea Seydoux clearly remembers and her take on it is perfect. Love the subtle flash of flesh, the colour is perfect against her skin and the red lips and nails match/clash with it so well. Top, top stuff. (Fellow Spectre Bond girl Monica Bellucci in Azzedine Alaia looks hot too.)

Reese Witherspoon in Stella McCartney

This colour is everything. Reese is on a complete roll this awards season: she's nailed metallic, she's nailed white and now she's nailed colour. The neckline is risqué without being trashy and the simple, sleek cut hugs her in exactly the right way. Bonus points for sensible, weather appropriate sleeves too.

Laura Bailey in Emilia Wickstead

I'm trying really hard to think of an Emilia Wickstead look I haven't liked and I'm really struggling. After Diane Kruger at the Golden Globes, this is another home run for the Brit designer. On the ever glam Laura this simple white gown just looks achingly, effortlessly cool. Teamed with a playful Charlotte Olympia clutch, it's a great - and very British - look.

Julianne Moore in Tom Ford

Turning to her other go to designer, having done magnificent things with Givenchy so far this awards season, the perma-gorgeous Best Actress winner looks stunning in this Tom Ford number. Love the contrasting fabrics (especially the velvet top), love the sleeves, even love the choker, but most of all I love her hair against that vibrant red.

Diana Agron in Lanvin

My other favourite lady in red tonight. The draping on this classic Lanvin gown is so beautiful. In fact the overall look is so simple, elegant and old school glamorous. I love her shoes and the gorgeous hair and make up too. 

BAFTAs: best dressed

We're so close to the Oscars now you can almost smell the stylists sweating and this weekend's BAFTA Awards was the final dress rehearsal. And for some ladies it went very well...

Angelina Jolie in Saint Laurent

Stop everything, because this is major. I'm not sure what I love most about this look. The tailoring of the suit is perfect. I adore the faux bow tie detailing on the shirt. The accessories (lack of) just work. But I think the main thing that makes this look rock is the attitude it's worn with. The sheer casualness, the sense of 'I'm Angelina Jolie and if I want to wear a suit then I'm going to wear a fucking suit', is so quietly sexy that it just blows my tiny mind.

Lupita Nyong'o in Christian Dior Couture

Looking better on a red carpet in CDC than Jennifer Lawrence ever has (sorry, J-Law, I still totes love you), Lupita is three for three for awards season fashion hits. Love the colour, love the fit, love the accessories (especially the cute double pearl earrings) and love the smokey eye makeup. I cannot wait to see her Oscars gown.

Uma Thurman in Atelier Versace

Navy blue is such an underrated colour; equally sexy but a bit more interesting than black. This dress is a complete knockout on the statuesque Uma. I love the single string diamond choker which packs a punch whilst still letting this impeccably fitting dress (and her incredible figure) do all the talking. Top marks for the 'undone' hair too. Proof that sometimes less is definitely more.

Amy Adams in Victoria Beckham

I do love me some VB. Not a designer you see that often on the big red carpets, this sexy column gown is 100% grown up, understated glam. It's an interesting choice for Amy A too - you don't often see her in black. The styling is bang on theme - understated, simple, dark - and I love the collar detailing.

Olga Kurylenko in Burberry

It's the sultry, scaly skirt on this beautiful Burberry dress that's doing it for me. I love the bronze and coppery colour and the fit is perfect; contrasted with the cute black bodice the look is dramatic and sleek. Again, the less-is-more approach to the styling is winning me over, especially the barely-there makeup.

BAFTAs: Best Dressed

I like the BAFTAs. They do have a certain pleasingly British quirkiness to them that the big LA ceremonies just don't have. They also tend to produce the winners list I agree most with and I was totally thrilled to see The Artist, Jean Dujardin, Meryl Streep and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy walk away with awards last night.

But enough of that. Let's look at the fashion (spoiler: contains a man).

Michelle Williams in H&M

Yes you read that correctly. One of the biggest and coolest stars of the red carpet chose high street. Admittedly bespoke high street, but still. Regardless of who designed this dress, I love the simplicity of it and the fit is perfect for her boyish figure. I love the wit of the Olympia Le-Tan Arthur Miller clutch too (Miller was of course Marilyn Monroe's husband and Williams is award nominated for playing Monroe).

Meryl Streep in Vivienne Westwood 

One word: regal. Amazing, super flattering cut with immaculate hair and make up. Love the cropped jacket too which is edgy without going overboard. A fabulous look on a fabulous human being.

Fearne Cotton in Moschino

Proof that you don't have to be a Hollywood A Lister to steal the show on the BAFTA red carpet. The colour of this is fab and the jewels are beautiful. I love the definition that the black belt and dark jewelled neckline give too.

Melissa George in Victoria Beckham

Good to see Victoria Beckham getting a proper red carpet Moment. This sequinned beauty is pure glamour and George carries it off with aplomb. Pared down accessories make sure the dress does all the talking whilst the vampy hair and make up give the look a lush Old Hollywood vibe.

Eddie Redmayne in Burberry

The first bloke to make it into my top 5s this season is gorgeous Burberry model/actor/general bright young thing Eddie in a Burberry velvet tux. I have to admit I have a serious thing for velvet DJs and there were a lot of them on show at the BAFTAs (see also: Kenneth Branagh, Cuba Gooding Jr and Tom Hiddleston) but on balance I think the lovely Eddie wears it the best. Just. Extra points for the perfectly jaunty pocket square too.

Award season round up - best dressed at the BAFTAs, SAGs, Brits and Grammys

It was very poorly planned of me to let my blogging slide during awards season. As previously stated, I love awards season and its excuses for unadulterated fashion perving (and bitchiness). The Golden Globes got this year's crop off to a flyer as well - I'm still salivating over Mila Kunis' emerald green beauty. How could the other ceremonies every compete with that parade of loveliness?

The Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAGs is such a hideous acronym) put up a good fight led, once again, by Mila Kunis in completely stunning deep red Alexander McQueen. I am developing a serious girl crush on Mila. Her red carpet choices are just bang on at the moment. I CANNOT WAIT to see her Oscars gown this weekend. Honourable mentions also to Lea Michelle, who looked beautiful in Oscar de la Renta with a plunging neckline, and Julia Stiles, staying the right side of gothic in dip dyed Monique Lhuillier. Controversially, I also want to mention a man at this point. Red carpet dressing for men is easy. No one ever gets it horrifically wrong, but rarely does anyone deserve a special mention for getting it right either. That said, I give you Andrew Garfield in midnight blue Burberry. Yeah. I just swooned a little.

Next up were the BAFTAs and Grammys, irritatingly holding ceremonies on the same night. In fashion terms these two couldn't have been further apart though. The Grammys were loud, sequinned and unapologetically glam. The BAFTAs were... well... underwhelming frankly. For a start Mila Kunis wasn't there. Instant fashion points lost! Overall the dresses were understated, which in many cases is a polite way of saying dull. There were some high points though. My pick goes to the ever gorgeous Julianne Moore who was the epitome of old Hollywood class in deep blue floor length velvet by the equally gorgeous Tom Ford. This dress was really simple, but incredibly effective against her hair and skin tone. I also liked Thandie Newton's shocking pink swirly Monique Lhuillier (who's having a bit of a moment) and Jessica Alba's colour pop cobalt blue Atelier Versace.

At the other end of the scale and the other side of the pond, the big names at the Grammys were having much more fun. I loved J Lo's completely age inappropriate futuristic Emilio Pucci and a newly-svelte Jennifer Hudson's gorgeous dark blue (I spot a theme here) Versace with a stunning sequinned bust. At the risk of being shouted down loudly and quickly, though, my top spot for this one is going to Kim Kardashian. Yes, you read that correctly. I adored her in her gold sequinned split to the waist/thigh KaufmanFranco number. Subtle it is not, but I defy you to say she looks anything other than stunning.

Last and least were the Brits. I've tried to pick three gowns per ceremony for the purposes of this post (plus Andrew Garfield. I'm still swooning) but from the disappointing crop of disappointing 'stars' who walked the red carpet for the Brits I only found two I thought were worth mentioning. Managing to look individual without being completely insane was Rihanna in eye popping Christian Dior Haute Couture. I'm not claiming for a second I would ever wear this, but I loved it on RiRi. Very much from the school of 'shouldn't work but it does' fashion as ever. I also loved Katherine Jenkins pouring her gorgeous curves into lush Vivienne Westwood florals. More conservative - and wearable - than Dior Couture, but no less lovely for it.

There's just the one ceremony left in the 2011 season now: The Oscars, this Sunday. Bring it.
